Question by Mad as a Hatter – Rezi: How to build a Goth wardrobe in high school (Well, preferably, before)?
Next year, I’ll be in ninth grade. High school. Oh, joy. I’ve been home schooled (on and off) for pretty much my entire life, but its really boring. The years I have been in school… Well, I had absolutely no style at all. I shudder at the thought of the old-lady shirts and powder blue sweatpants I wore in fourth grade. And I can NOT be expected to go to a place filled with teenagers with my style at A. I hate and B. Makes utterly no sense. Seriously, its a mix of random clothes that go with pretty much nothing and would look better as curtains.

I’ve been interested in Goth for a while now. My mom is supportive… ish. (Not exactly “Lets go out and buy you some spider webs and black lipstick!” but she’s fine with her 13-year-old wearing black eyeshadow and corsets (over a shirt, of course). I did have to explain to her that “Goth” does not mean “Depressed and mean” and that my depression has nothing to do with goth). But I don’t really know where to start. While I would be perfectly happy to wear long lace dresses and petticoats and hats and victorian boots and a lot of black and red and- Okay, you get the idea. I could NEVER afford to replace all my clothes with that before high school. And yes, I need them BEFORE school so I can actually have a style I like (and less likely of annoying people telling me I’m “Just turning into a goth for *insert stupid reason here*” because if I am before they meet me, they wouldn’t think they know me).

Sure, I can get a ton of black tees and skirts and jeans, but not really all that… Fun. Or Goth, for that matter, considering how much black people wear. I want lace and black glitter!

There are absolutely NO Gothic stores near me (Hot topic does not count. What is goth about cheap hair extensions, Hello Kitty and trendy music?) except one… But its the wrong style, and half of it is a 18 and over store. So yeah, don’t want to go there.

I can sew. Not very well (Patterns are evil) but my mom can and she will teach me and we have a sewing machine. I do have some base patterns to work off of. The pattern kit has a cool flowy blouse, bloomers (Yay!) and a dress that looks like a victorian night gown, which I shall be using as a ghost costume on halloween. I’m perfectly capable of simple DIY- Mind you, “Simple” means something else to me. I can make little clay roses for a bib necklace in a minutes, I can make a tutu to sew onto a shirt and I can make a nice little choker out of a velvet ribbon and lace trim. But if it has to do with painting, drawing or cutting out things to sew on stuff (too much of a perfectionist)?

So, basically, how do I make plain black clothes look more pretty and gothic? Because Goth is sooo not simple. I will definitely be getting a top hat, maybe some more hats, black lace fingerless gloves, a hand fan and parasol. Maybe an under bust corset (I felt ridiculous in a full, and it was cheaply made and broke).

Bonus Question- Do you think I would be allowed to wear a top hat in school?

Yet another- What is a good lipstick color? My mom won’t let me wear dark red (I look too old) and I don’t like wearing black lipstick (super messy) and lighter shades just look a bit odd with black eyeshadow.
I’ve been almost 6 feet since 6th grade, I’ve been homeschooled, I don’t have a lot of friends and I’ve been shy my entire life. Do you really think I care what people say about me any more? I like the style, I have for years (Any chance I could wear a halloween costume, I would) and I recently found out I love the music. And what is a “Real Goth”? Do you even know about the many many different categories of goth? (Romantic, Cyber, Victorian, Gothabilly, Steampunk (close enough), etc.) And how does wearing long black skirts and a corset over a shirt have anything to do with Easy A? If my only chance to wear a top hat in public (Without looking stupid) is with an all black outfit, possibly with spiderwebs, so be it.
“Be yourself! Don’t wear the fashion you like, shop at trendy little shops and wear clothes you find boring and plain.” On what planet does this make sense?

And… I DO NOT CARE WHAT YOUR OPINION IS, I ASKED HOW TO GET SOME CLOTHES I LIKE! Are you blind?

Adoara: Thank you for actually helping. I’ve looked into Lolita… Not exactly cheap and I would feel totally ridiculous wearing life size doll clothes. I could so not pull that off. ? A quick DIY video on how to exfoliate your lips. Your lips are just as gentle as your skin, so be sure to take extra care of your lips and use lip balm or lip products with SPF.
